Case Study: Installation Of Fire Extinguishers In Mall Common Areas & Retail Stores
Overview
Commercial Restroom Partitions is proud to have worked with Lockard Companies in the construction of The Outlets of Corpus Christi Bay. This new outdoor mall, located on I-69 adjacent to the Nueces County Fairgrounds, occupies a prime piece of Texas real estate traveled by over 21 million motorists per year. The new retail center is intended to supply major name brands in clothing and footwear to a previously under served area with a vibrant local economy and a thriving tourist industry.
This case study focuses on the installation of fire extinguishers in the outdoor mall common areas and select retail stores.
Background
Corpus Christi is only minutes away from South Padre Island—one of Texas’s most popular destination spots. Over 50 percent of the entire population of the state lives less than 4 hours drive from this burgeoning tourist area. With such accessibility, the area is visited by an average of 8 million visitors per year. Most travelers come to spend several days at a time,–making it likely they will spend at least one of these days shopping.
While oil and gas have had their ups and downs in Texas history, the Corpus Christi area has remained one of the strongest economic sectors in the state. The average household income is $48,675.00, while the cost of living is relatively low compared to other parts of the country. In recent years, the Ingleside Naval Station has been remodeled into an oil production facility, and the Eagle Ford Shale deposit is also located in the area. At times when oil and gas are booming, the industry has paid over 4 billion dollars on wages to workers who both live and travel to the area for work.
Location of Fire Extinguishers
As with all public facilities, the number and locations of fire extinguishers depend on facility occupancy. Fire extinguishers are located in mall walkways on building exteriors. There are also two fire extinguishers located within the retail store, Rack Room Shoes.
Installation Details
Fire extinguishers were mounted in cabinets that feature door pulls and safety locks. Cabinets were surface mounted for convenient access by mall patrons or staff.
Equipment Details
Fire Extinguishers
Filled with non-toxic, siliconized and fluidized mono ammonium phosphate powder, these extinguishers are specifically designed to put out Class B (fuses) and Class A fires (insulates). The cylinder features heavy-duty construction with a metal valve, an upright squeeze grip with pull pen, a pressure gauge, and a siphon tube that comes with a molded valve stem.
These fire extinguishers also feature an anodized coating that prevents corrosion from the salt air.
Fire Extinguisher Cabinets
These surface mounted units are manufactured from cold rolled steel and come with a white powder coat finish. Cabinet doors close flush against a 5/8 inch door stop and are mounted with a continuous hinge. The handle is zinc-plated, and the cabinet edges can be ordered square or rolled. Door glass is clear acrylic.
