Daily cleaning of your commercial restroom mirrors is another one of these “maintenance must do’s” that is often neglected by work crews. A mirror may appear clean to a casual observer passing by, but it will look spotted and smeared to someone staring directly into it. It is important to have your maintenance crew thoroughly clean your mirrors at least once a day. The mirror is the last thing a user normally sees before leaving your restroom. If the last thing he or she remembers is dirt, your entire restroom will be remembered as dirty.

We install both framed and frameless mirrors in public restrooms and commercial bathrooms throughout the United States. The presence or absence of a frame is really a matter of aesthetic preference more than anything else. If you do invest in a framed mirror, you have to make sure to take care of the frame as part of your routine mirror maintenance.

Mirror frames are made from 430 stainless steel. Contrary to popular misconception, stainless steel is not 100 percent rust resistant. It can and will corrode if neglected, and permanent discoloration of the steel will result if this corrosion is not immediately removed. We recommend that you use a stainless steel cleaner like those made by Goddard or Revere, or invest in a mild cleaner like Bon Ami or Ajax. This will maintain the appearance of your stainless steel mirror frame indefinitely.

Once any corrosion is removed from the mirror frame, you can maintain its luster with soap and water or a standard glass cleaner applied with a cotton cloth. Under no circumstances should you ever use any of the following products for stainless steel mirror frame maintenance:

  • Water with a heavy iron content that can leave a rusty residue. If your tap water contains iron, used distilled water instead.

  • Soap with chemical additives that will discolor the steel

  • Any cleaner that contains chloride, including all bleaches

  • Any cleaning pad that contains iron, like steel wool

  • Anything with salt

Remove any stickers that vandals may place on the mirror frame immediately. Moisture will build up under the stickers and corrode/discolor the steel.

The reflective surface of your mirror is much easier to maintain. Mirror surfaces are made from either laminated glass or tempered glass. Standard glass cleaners can be used on either type of glass. Mirror surfaces should be cleaned at least once a day at least because water inevitably splashes onto the glass and leaves little spots that will quickly make the entire bathroom look dirty if not removed.
