Grab Bars for Public Toilets and Shower Rooms

Grab bars for public toilets and shower rooms are specified under The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Grab bar configurations and weight requirements must meet the minimum ADA requirements for compliant construction and be properly installed. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is a civil rights law that prohibits disability discrimination.

Minimum ADA Requirements for Grab Bars

All grab bars for handicapped use should support a minimum 250 pounds weight requirement.  Materials are conformed from type 304 stainless steel with optional satin, textured or painted finish. Flanges are available in concealed, snap on, or with exposed fasteners.

Minimum grab bar lengths for handicap toilet stalls is one 36” and 42” long. Some states require third grab bar 18” to be installed vertically. ADA requires a diameter of 1 ¼” to 2 inches. Two wall configurations can be used instead of single designs under minimum ADA requirements. Ambulatory stalls require a minimum of two 42” horizontal bars located on the left and right walls of the toilet.

Handicap showers can be fitted with two or three wall grab bars. To ensure the correct lengths for ADA showers, the width and depth of stall is required.

Installment heights for ADA Grab bars requirements are 33” to 36” above the finished floor for adult stalls and 18” to 27” above finished floor for children stalls.

When properly mounted, heavy-duty grab bars meet or exceed the requirements for ANSI standard A1171, the ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines for Building and Facilities (ADAAG) and the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standard (UFAS).
