ADA Compliant Toilet Stalls – Regulatory Guidelines

ADA Title III requires that any new construction be built with ADA compliant toilet stalls. These stalls must either meet or exceed the requirements set down by the ADAAG. Furthermore, remodeling projects in existing public restrooms must also follow the same new construction guidelines.

The following non-exhaustive summary of basic guidelines can give you a general idea of what fixtures and accessories you will need to order to keep our project in compliance with Federal Code. Additional local codes will also have to be followed to keep your facility in good standing with all regulatory agencies, be they local, state, or Federal.

Standard Wheelchair Accessible Toilet Compartments
A standard size, wheelchair accessible ADA toilet stall is required for all new constructions and remodels. The toilet must be offset on the back wall so that its centerline measures 18 inches from the nearest partition or side wall. The door must swing outward no ore than 4 inches from the corner diagonal to the toilet. Grab bars must be mounted horizontally on the nearest side wall or partition and on the back wall.

ADA Toilet stall Doors
Restroom partition doors must open and close with only 5 pounds of force or less. Additionally, any latches, locks, door pulls, or handles must be operable with only one hand. The user must be able to operate these attachments without twisting his or her wrist in the process. Door attachments can be no more than 48 inches from the floor.

ADA Toilets
We recommend that you install “undercut” bowls because the most important thing about an ADA toilet is the height of the seat. The seat must be no less than 17 inches and no more than 19 inches above the floor. 17-18 inches works best for standard stalls. 18-19 inches is better for 36” walk-in restroom stalls.

Grab Bar Assemblies
Each grab bar must be able to support more than 250 pounds per foot. This includes all flanges and screws used to mount the bars. Each bar must also have a diameter measuring 1 ¼ inch to 1 ½ inch. The centerline of each grab bar must be mounted between 33 inches and 36 inches above the floor. In standard compartments, you must install one grab bar that is at least 42 inches long on the wall or the partition closest to the toilet. This bar can be no more than 12 inches from the back wall. You must also mount a second grab bar, measuring at least 36 inches, on the back wall and no more than 6 inches from the side wall closest to the toilet. Local codes may further regulate grab bar assemblies and must also be researched and followed.

Toe Clearance
If the restroom stall is deeper than 62 inches, there is no toe clearance minimum. For smaller stalls, the minimum clearance is 9 inches.
