Commercial restroom  designs for ADA and Ambulatory stall designs for bathroom partitions and accessories should be configured to meet national codes.  Distances for dividers and accessories should allow for common usage by people with a limited range of motion.  The following dimensions should be considered when designing for an accessible ADA or Ambulatory stall designs.

 

  1. Any accessories that a person might need to reach should be a maximum of 48″ off the floor.
  2. Grab Bars need to be mounted lower for better leverage (approximately 33″-36″H).  Horizontal side and wall grab bars need to be 42″ minimum length.
  3. Rear wall grab bars must be a minimum of 36″ long, and mounted so 24″ are to the transfer side of the toilet and the other 12″ to the wall side.
  4. Toilet tissue need to be easily within arm’s reach. The ADA guide defines this as being within 7-0″ from the front of the bowl and at least 15″ off of the ground with a max height 48″.
  5. Dispensers that are not recessed must be more than 12″ above or below grab bars.
  6. Latches cannot require a tight grasp, or pinching  or twisting of the wrist. All latches must be operable with one hand and using less than five pounds of pressure.

Engineering drawings and specs, based on requested layout, will be provided based on national codes with all proposals and according to these guidelines. It is advised to check with accessibility guidelines with your local building codes, as they may be more strict than national codes.
